History of Phoenix Art Museum

Phoenix Art Museum is the Southwest United States’ largest art museum for visual art. Founded in 1959, the museum’s collection includes more than 18,000 works of art from America, Europe, Asia, and Latin America. The museum presents rotating exhibitions throughout the year and its permanent collection.

The museum was originally housed in a rented space in downtown Phoenix. In 1963, the museum moved to a larger facility on Central Avenue. The new building doubled the size of the gallery space and included a sculpture garden. In 1971, the museum expanded again, adding a new wing for Native American art. In 1999, Phoenix Art Museum underwent a major expansion and renovation project that added 124,000 square feet of new gallery space. Today, the museum occupies nearly 400,000 square feet and is one of Arizona’s most prominent cultural institutions.

The Phoenix Art Museum is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing Arizona students with additional learning opportunities.
